IPO Investor categories
• Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs)- Qualified
Institutional Buyers (QIBs) are usually large and knowledgeable investors such
as mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds and hedge funds. These
investors have the skills and resources to effectively assess investment
opportunities. To participate in an IPO, QIBS must fulfil the specific economic
norms set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Unlike
investors in the retail trade, QIBs can offer shares at a lower price than when they are introduced to the public.
• Non -institutional investors (NIIS) - There are
usually individual investors, people with high net worth (HNI,) or companies
that are not qualified as qualified institutional buyers (QIBs). They can
participate in a stock exchange listing at the same price as retail investors.
The NII category has two subclasses:
1. SNII - "SNII" means "small non
-non-institutional investors." This group consists of investors who bid
for shares. 2 lakhs and ₹10 lakhs in the IPO.
2. BNII - "BNII" means "big non
-non-institutional investors". This group consists of investors who bid
for more shares than ₹10 lakhs in the IPO.
• Personal Investors (RII) - Retail Individual
Investors (Riis) are individual investors applying for shares up to ₹2 lakhs in
IPO. This category is designed to encourage everyday people to invest in
listings.
• Employees (EMP) - In IPO, the employee (EMP)
category is separated for the employees, directors, and business partners in the
company that issues shares. The number of shares available in this category is
decided by the company and the head of the IPO.
• Other- a category of qualified investors who have a
fixed number of shares reserved for them in the IPO.
