IPO Investor Categories
• Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB)- Qualified
Institutional Buyers (QIBs) are usually large and knowledgeable investors like
mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds, and hedge funds. These
investors have the skills and resources to assess investment opportunities
effectively. To participate in an IPO, QIBs must meet specific financial
criteria set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Unlike
retail investors, QIBs can bid for shares at a lower price than what is offered
to the general public.
• Non-Institutional Investors (NII) - are
usually individual investors, High Net Worth Individuals (HNIs), or companies
that don’t qualify as Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs). They can take part
in an IPO at the same price as retail investors.
NII category has two subcategories:
1. sNII - "sNII" stands for
"Small Non-Institutional Investor." This group includes investors who
bid for shares worth between ₹2 lakhs and ₹10 lakhs in an initial public offering (IPO).
2. bNII - "bNII" stands for "Big
Non-Institutional Investor." This group includes investors who bid for
shares worth more than ₹10 lakhs in an IPO.
• Retail Individual Investors (RII) - Retail Individual Investors (RIIs) are individual investors who apply for shares worth up to ₹2 lakhs in an IPO. This category is designed to encourage everyday people to invest in the IPO.
• Employee (EMP)- The Employee (EMP) category in an IPO is set
aside for employees, directors, and business partners of the company issuing
the shares. The company and the lead manager of the IPO decide the number of shares available in this category.
• Others- A category of eligible investors who
have a set number of shares reserved for them in the IPO.
